OpenAI head walks back ‘job apocalypse’ warnings

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman projects that the rapid development and widespread adoption of artificial intelligence technologies will not lead to a global apocalypse in the labor market. Speaking virtually at a conference in Sydney, the head of the tech giant acknowledged that his initial concerns about the total eradication of office jobs and reductions in entry-level white-collar positions were mistaken. According to Altman, the startup’s leadership accurately predicted the pace of technological advancement when launching ChatGPT in 2022, but miscalculated the extent of short-term socio-economic consequences.

He emphasized that as neural networks integrate into real business processes, the irreplaceability of the human factor in professional activities has become evident. The interaction between people and direct social contact remain critically important in many areas of employment, making it nearly impossible to fully replace these elements with algorithms. The head of OpenAI expressed his relief at being able to acknowledge the inaccuracies in his previous pessimistic forecasts and emphasized that he does not share the panic-driven narratives about widespread unemployment propagated by some other members of the tech sector.

Despite Altman’s optimistic remarks, current economic statistics reveal localized challenges in the global labor market. Over the past year, the total number of layoffs in the United States has increased by 54% year-on-year, with around 55,000 individuals losing their jobs directly due to automation and the integration of artificial intelligence. Major global financial institutions, including Singapore’s DBS Bank, have also begun to streamline their workforce and implement planned layoffs in response to the active adoption of new digital tools.
